House in Maida Vale, 2014–15
Originally a four storey Victorian townhouse within a typical West London terrace, the house had subsequently been divided into two flats with the loss of most of the original internal features.
We were asked to create a modern family home, returning it to a single dwelling. The work involved the extensive remodelling of the house, and re-designing the principal living spaces whilst being sympathetic to the terrace house typology.
A change in level, introduced as part of the new family living area at garden level, included an infill extension that leads to a courtyard garden. A void introduced between the two lower floors connects to an upper living room; creating an unexpected volume, and bringing light to the centre of the principal living spaces.
We also designed a number of bespoke furniture pieces and fittings; with a simple palette of natural materials and finishes used throughout the house to provide the backdrop for family life.
