House in East London

The extension and remodelling of a mid-nineteenth century house, one of a pair of once rural cottages that became progressively more suburban through the late 19th century and 20th century.

The project looks to the history of the site and surroundings, proposing a new addition to the house that responds to both the contemporary and historic context.

The brief called for the remodelling of the ground floor to create a new kitchen and study overlooking the garden. At first floor a new bedroom opens onto a small loggia; screening the bedroom from overlooking, and providing a small external balcony space.

The client’s backgrounds in publishing and the restoration of modern furniture informs the design and the use of materials.

The project is currently at detail design stage and due to start on site in Spring of 2016.
